Nella piccola cittadina americana Derry prende vita un’entità misteriosa dall’aspetto di un clown chiamato Pennywise. Il primo incontro avviene con un bambino di nome George Denbrough che esce a giocare con una barchetta durante un’alluvione. La barchetta accidentalmente finisce in un canale di scolo e Pennywise avvicina il bambino per ridargli la barchetta, ma lo uccide brutalmente divorandogli il braccio sinistro. George ha però un fratello maggiore balbuziente di nome Bill che, dopo la morte del fratellino, fa conoscenza con altri ragazzi del paese e formeranno la banda dei “Perdenti”, tra essi ci sono: un ragazzo obeso Ben Hanscom che è sempre stato preso di mira dalla banda dei bulli del quartiere, l’ipocondriaco Eddie Kaspbrak, l’irruento Richie Tozier, l’ebreo e boyscout Stan Uris e la maschiaccia Beverly Marsh. 

I ragazzi capiscono che tutti loro hanno avuto un incontro con IT ma in diverse situazioni ad esempio Bill sotto forma di un album sanguinante, Eddie come un vagabondo lebbroso, Richie come un lupo mannaro, Beverly come un lavandino che spruzza sangue e così via. Capiscono così che It può assumere forme diverse. Successivamente si aggiunge al gruppo un ragazzo afroamericano, Mike Hanlon che è sempre stato preso di mira dalla banda dei bulli e racconta agli amici di aver avuto anche lui un incontro con il mostro. L’entità prende vita ogni 27-28 anni e si manifesta con una serie di sanguinosi omicidi (soprattutto bambini) e il gruppo dei Perdenti ha più volte incontri con il sadico pagliaccio (si presenta molte volte con in mano dei palloncini) che gioca sulle paure di questi ultimi e cerca di abbatterli tramite il loro terrore e debolezza. Dopo una lunga caccia con le loro biciclette, i “Perdenti” trovano il rifugio di It (cioè di “esso” con valenza di pronome persona inglese) nelle fogne della cittadina e lo attaccano e lo feriscono gravemente, ma si ritirano prima di averlo ucciso e in seguito stringono un patto che li obbliga a tornare nel caso il mostro si ripresenti.

Col passare del tempo tutti i ragazzi lasciano la città e si creano una loro vita tra lavoro e famiglia e dimenticano l’accaduto, tranne Mike che decide di rimanere a Derry e Stan che si suicida. Ventisette anni dopo nel 1985, Mike richiama il gruppo per fronteggiare la nuova ondata di omicidi causati dal mostro che si è risvegliato per portare sangue e morte. Tutti vivono nella ricchezza e successo, ma nessuno ha avuto figli perché tutti hanno il ricordo della loro infelicità infantile. Anche Henry il “capo” della banda dei bulli riappare dal passato: si trova in prigione dopo aver confessato di aver ucciso i bambini che invece sono morti a causa di Pennywise. Il mostro sfrutta l’uomo in carcere per riuscire ad uccidere il gruppo dei 6 amici, ma non ci riesce. Il romanzo si traduce poi in una descrizione quasi fantascientifica, poichè It sarebbe una cometa atterrata sul nostro pianeta. Il gruppo decide così di andare nelle fogne dove risiede il mostro che si presenta come un ragno gigante da cui poi riescono a strappare il cuore causando così la morte dell’entità e la caduta dell’intera città di Derry. Questo romanzo tratta temi come: drammi umani senza speranza, la profonda incisività dei traumi infantili, il prezzo della violenza occultata dietro una fragile maschera di felicità, la bassezza umana nascosta dietro una sorridente cittadina.

In the small American town of Derry, a mysterious clown-like entity called Pennywise comes to life. The first encounter is with a child named George Denbrough who goes out to play with a boat during a flood. The boat accidentally ends up in a gutter and Pennywise approaches the child to give him the boat back, but brutally kills him by devouring his left arm. George, however, has a stuttering older brother named Bill who, after the death of his little brother, gets acquainted with other boys in the town and forms the group of the "Losers", among them are: an obese boy Ben Hanscom who has always been taken by targeted by the gang of neighborhood bullies, hypochondriac Eddie Kaspbrak, fiery Richie Tozier, Jew and boy scout Stan Uris and tomboy Beverly Marsh. 

The guys understand that all of them have had a meeting with IT but in different situations such as Bill in the form of a bloody album, Eddie as a leper tramp, Richie as a werewolf, Beverly as a sink spraying blood and so on. Thus they understand that It can take different forms. Later an African American boy, Mike Hanlon, who has always been targeted by the gang of bullies, joins the group and tells his friends that he too had an encounter with the monster. The entity comes to life every 27-28 years and manifests itself with a series of bloody murders (especially children) and the Losers group has repeatedly encounters with the sadistic clown (he shows up many times with balloons in his hand) who plays on the fears of the latter and tries to bring them down through their terror and weakness. After a long hunt with their bicycles, the "Losers" find the refuge of It (that is, of "it" with the meaning of an English person pronoun) in the sewers of the town and attack and seriously injure him, but retreat before killing him. and later make a pact that forces them to return in case the monster returns.

Over time, all the boys leave the city and create their own life between work and family and forget what happened, except Mike who decides to stay in Derry and Stan who commits suicide. Twenty-seven years later in 1985, Mike recalls the group to face the new wave of murders caused by the monster that has awakened to bring blood and death. Everyone lives in wealth and success, but no one has had children because everyone has the memory of their childhood unhappiness. Henry the "leader" of the gang of bullies also reappears from the past: he is in prison after having confessed to killing the children who instead died because of Pennywise. The monster exploits the man in prison to be able to kill the group of 6 friends, but fails. The novel then translates into an almost science-fiction description, as It would be a comet that landed on our planet. The group decides to go to the sewers where the monster resides, which looks like a giant spider from which they then manage to tear the heart, thus causing the death of the entity and the fall of the entire city of Derry. This novel deals with themes such as: human dramas without hope, the profound incisiveness of childhood traumas, the price of hidden behind a fragile mask behind the violence of happiness, the human baseness hidden in a smiling citizen.
